Giuseppe Zola(Director 1803-1806)

(Concesio, 1739-1806)

Started at home and at school to philosophy, mathematics and theology, he became at twenty years librarian at the Library Queriniana of Brescia.
He was a teacher at the Roman College in Rome and Ecclesiastical History in Pavia where he was also Rector. Forced to resign in 1790 together with Giuseppe Tamburini because of the uncertain orthodoxy of his works, he was restored to the throne in 1796 at the return of the French, but for the closing of the Faculty of Theology he was called to the public high school in Brescia to teach eloquence and history . During the brief Austrian restoration of 1799 he retired to Concesio, but with the return of Napoleon he went back to Pavia to teach History of the laws and customs and Diplomatic History. In 1803 he was appointed director of the Library, a role without pay for the prestige that it followed and the pension he already enjoyed.

He managed, according to reports from Stanislao Perondoli, periodic updating, purchasing of bio-bibliographic repertoires as well as guaranteeing the scientific level of the increases when seeking the opinion of the professors of the various faculties, as well as provide for the purchase of classic authors in monumental editions that still qualify the old collections of the Library.

He is remembered by a plaque, placed at the university of Pavia, which recites:
